Anna Dyson

Anna Dyson, Hines Professor of Sustainable Architectural Design in Architecture and Design at Yale University’s School of Architecture and Professor at the Yale School of the Environment, is the founding Director of the Yale Center for Ecosystems in Architecture (Yale CEA). This interdisciplinary initiative unites labs across Yale to research, develop, and deploy novel architectural systems that metabolize energy, water, and materials innovatively. Holding a B.A. and M.Arch. from Yale University, with additional studies at Università di Siena and Université Laval, Dyson previously co-founded the Center for Architecture, Science and Ecology (CASE) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in 2007. At Yale School of Architecture, she established a pioneering PhD program in Architectural Sciences, recognized with the Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) award for most innovative academic program and an Award of Excellence from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).

Dyson leads design research securing funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and others. She holds numerous international patents for building systems innovations in clean energy collection, water distribution, air quality, and material life cycles. Key designs include Climate Camouflage and Integrated Concentrating Solar Façade (American Institute of Architects first prize), Solar Enclosure for Water Reuse (SEWR), and Active Modular Phytoremediation System (AMPS), deployed in the Bronx Public Safety Answering Center II—hailed as one of the Wall Street Journal's Best Architectures of 2017. The Yale CEA’s Ecological Living Module, integrating on-site energy, water, and agriculture, was named the #1 World Changing Idea by UN News in 2019. Recipient of Architectural Record’s Innovator Award, her work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, World Future Energy Summit, and Center for Architecture. She teaches advanced courses such as Advanced Building Envelope Design and Environmental Design.
