Her academic career at the university includes prior roles as Senior Lecturer in Urban Planning and Assistant Dean of Diversity and Inclusion. Hurlimann's research specializes in climate change action across the built environment, encompassing adaptation and mitigation strategies. Additional foci include water management, public acceptance of sustainable water sources, coastal adaptation, and aligning climate actions with the Sustainable Development Goals to achieve equitable outcomes.
Throughout her career, Hurlimann has produced influential publications that have shaped discourse in urban planning and environmental management. Notable works include "What affects public acceptance of recycled and desalinated water?" published in Water Research in 2011 (379 citations), "When public opposition defeats alternative water projects—the case of Toowoomba Australia" also in Water Research in 2010 (355 citations), "A local coastal adaptation pathway" in Nature Climate Change in 2014 (341 citations), "The role of spatial planning in adapting to climate change" in Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews: Climate Change in 2012 (265 citations), and "Urban planning policy must do more to integrate climate change adaptation and mitigation actions" in Land Use Policy in 2021 (260 citations). Her scholarship has amassed over 6,200 citations and has been cited in Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports, underscoring her impact on the field. Hurlimann has secured competitive research funding, including Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage and Discovery Grants, the 2016 Dyason Fellowship for her project "Climate Ready Water Futures" hosted at University College London, and received the 2014 Award for Planning Excellence. She actively contributes to teaching urban planning courses and participates in public discourse through speaking engagements on climate-resilient cities and sustainable development.
