About Anna

Anna Markowitz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Education at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Education and Information Studies. She holds a Ph.D. in Psychology with a concentration in Human Development and Public Policy from Georgetown University (2016), an M.P.P. from Georgetown University's McCourt School of Public Policy (2013), an M.A. in Applied Developmental and Educational Psychology from Boston College's Lynch School of Education (2011), and a B.A. in Psychology (summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa) with a minor in Creative Writing from Gettysburg College (2007). Markowitz joined UCLA as Assistant Professor in 2019 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2024. Prior appointments include Research Assistant Professor at the University of Virginia's Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning (2018–2019) and Postdoctoral Research Associate at EdPolicyWorks, University of Virginia (2016–2018).

Her research centers on early childhood education, with a focus on teacher well-being, turnover, professional development, classroom quality, and policy impacts on children's outcomes, utilizing large-scale data from programs such as Head Start and Louisiana's early education initiatives. Current projects include the Study of Early Education in Louisiana, Teacher Turnover in Head Start, and Food Insecurity in Early Childhood. Markowitz has earned the UCLA Society of Hellman Fellowship (2022) for her project 'Rebuilding Child Care After COVID: Understanding Teacher Wellbeing, Teacher Turnover, and Pathways to Recovery'; AERA Outstanding Reviewer Awards (2023, 2019); Thomas B. Fordham Institute and American Enterprise Institute Emerging Education Policy Scholar (2018); and AERA-SRCD Early Career Fellow in Early Education and Development (2017). Key publications encompass 'Within-year teacher turnover in Head Start and children’s school readiness' (AERA Open, 2024), 'Do early educators improve over time? Tracking improvement trajectories in the universe of child care, Head Start, and school-based pre-k teachers in Louisiana' (AERA Open, 2025), 'Teacher turnover in early childhood education: Longitudinal evidence from the universe of publicly-funded programs in Louisiana' (Educational Researcher, 2022), 'Linking early educator wellbeing to classroom interactions and teacher turnover' (Early Childhood Research Quarterly, 2024), and 'Teacher-child racial/ethnic match and parental engagement in Head Start' (American Educational Research Journal, 2020). As principal or co-investigator, she has secured multimillion-dollar grants from the Administration for Children and Families and others, advancing policies on educator retention and early care quality.
