Her research centers on early childhood education, with a focus on teacher well-being, turnover, professional development, classroom quality, and policy impacts on children's outcomes, utilizing large-scale data from programs such as Head Start and Louisiana's early education initiatives. Current projects include the Study of Early Education in Louisiana, Teacher Turnover in Head Start, and Food Insecurity in Early Childhood. Markowitz has earned the UCLA Society of Hellman Fellowship (2022) for her project 'Rebuilding Child Care After COVID: Understanding Teacher Wellbeing, Teacher Turnover, and Pathways to Recovery'; AERA Outstanding Reviewer Awards (2023, 2019); Thomas B.
