Professor Anna C. Peacock is Professor of Photonics in the Engineering faculty at the University of Southampton, where she heads the Nonlinear Semiconductor Photonics group within the Optoelectronics Research Centre and serves as Deputy Director of the Centre. She began her academic career in New Zealand, obtaining BSc and MSc degrees in Physics from the University of Auckland, before moving to the University of Southampton to complete her PhD in Nonlinear Fibre Optics at the Optoelectronics Research Centre. Following her doctorate, she received a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship in recognition of her pioneering contributions to fiberized semiconductor photonic devices. Throughout her career, Peacock has advanced optical fibre technologies, including fibre amplifiers, micro-structured fibres, and novel material fibres.
Peacock's research focuses on nonlinear optics, fibre optics, silicon photonics, and novel photonic materials, with a current emphasis on developing semiconductor waveguides in both fibre and planar formats for nonlinear optical applications. She has authored 296 publications, which have collectively received over 6,500 citations, underscoring her substantial impact in photonics and optoelectronics. Key publications include "High-efficiency mid-infrared wavelength conversion in silicon waveguides" (APL Photonics, 2025), "Intermodal four-wave mixing in silicon core fibers: enabling versatile wavelength conversion in the mid-infrared range" (Optics Express, 2025), "Laser-drawn silicon core fibres for Raman amplification and wavelength conversion" (2025), and "Laser-drawn silicon core fibers for nonlinear photonics" (IEEE IPC, 2024). Her accolades include election as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng, 2024), Fellow of the IEEE Photonics Society (FIEEE), Fellow of Optica (FOSA), Fellow of the Institute of Physics (FInstP), and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). Peacock also holds the position of Editor-in-Chief for Optics Communications and acts as Deputy Lead for the postgraduate course OPTO6015 Optical Fibres and Waveguides.
