About Anne

Anne S. Tsui is the Motorola Professor Emerita of International Management at Arizona State University in the W. P. Carey School of Business, within the Business & Economics faculty. She earned her Ph.D. in Behavioral and Organizational Sciences from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1981, an M.A. in Personnel and Industrial Relations from the University of Minnesota in 1975, and a B.A. in Psychology and Business Administration from the University of Minnesota Duluth in 1973. She also holds an Honorary Doctor of Economics from the University of St. Gallen, awarded in 2015.

Tsui's career spans numerous leadership roles, including Motorola Professor of International Management at Arizona State University from 2003 to 2011, Founding Head and Chair Professor of Management at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology from 1994 to 2003, and positions at Duke University and the University of California, Irvine. She currently holds appointments as Adjunct Distinguished Professor at the University of Notre Dame's Mendoza College of Business, Distinguished Visiting Professor at Peking University's Guanghua School of Management and Fudan University, among others. Her research interests include employment relationships, organizational leadership, organizational culture, and performance implications of strategic human resource management, with a focus on management in China. Notable publications encompass highly cited papers such as "Being Different: Relational Demography and Organizational Attachment" (Administrative Science Quarterly, 1992), "Alternative Approaches to the Employee-Organization Relationship: Does Investment in Employees Pay Off?" (Academy of Management Journal, 1997), and books including "The Management of Enterprises in the People’s Republic of China" (2002), "China's Domestic Private Firms: Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Management and Performance" (2006), and "Leadership of Chinese Private Enterprises: Insights and Interviews" (2017).

She is a Fellow of the Academy of Management (1997), Academy of International Business, American Psychological Association, and American Association for the Advancement of Science (2022). Honors include the Academy of Management Lifetime Distinguished Service Award (2015), International Association for Chinese Management Research Lifetime Contribution Award (2016), and best paper awards from Academy of Management Journal and Administrative Science Quarterly (1998).
