Associate Professor Anthea Taylor is Chair of the Discipline of Gender and Cultural Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney. She completed a BA (Hons) at the University of Wollongong, an MA (Hons), and a PhD at the University of New South Wales. Before joining the University of Sydney's Gender and Cultural Studies in July 2013, she served as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies, University of Queensland.
Taylor's research focuses on gender and popular culture, celebrity, and popular feminism. She has authored three monographs: Germaine Greer: Celebrity Feminism and the Archive (Routledge, 2023), Celebrity and the Feminist Blockbuster (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014), and Mediating Australian Feminism: Re-reading the Politics of Representation (Peter Lang, 2008). Her articles appear in journals such as Celebrity Studies, Cultural Studies, Feminist Media Studies, and Contemporary Women's Writing. Selected publications include "'Steve is twice the Aussie icon you will ever be': Germaine Greer, the Australian settler colony and white masculinity" (Celebrity Studies, 2019), "Gendered Self-representation in Julia Gillard's My Story and Hillary Clinton's What Happened" (Contemporary Women's Writing, 2023), and contributions to "What's become of Australian Cultural Studies" (Cultural Studies, 2015). Taylor leads ARC Linkage Projects, including one on Australian independent publishing that received funding in 2023 as part of a $3.9 million award. She engages in public lectures on popular and celebrity feminisms and supervises PhD scholarships in Australian publishing. As Chair, she directs departmental research and teaching programs.
