Antony Hosking is Professor and School Director of the School of Computing at the Australian National University. He holds a BSc in Mathematical Sciences from the University of Adelaide, an MSc in Computer Science from the University of Waikato, and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Prior to joining ANU, he served for over twenty years on the faculty of Purdue University as Assistant Professor and tenured Associate Professor of Computer Science. He is also an Honorary Professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
Professor Hosking’s research interests lie in programming languages, software systems, and software assurance, with specific focus on object persistence, database systems, distribution, memory management including garbage collection, managed language runtimes, language virtual machines, optimizing compilers, and architectural support for programming languages and systems. He is co-author of The Garbage Collection Handbook: The Art of Automatic Memory Management, first published in 2012 with a second edition in 2023. He is an ACM Distinguished Scientist and Life Member of the Association for Computing Machinery, an elected member of the Association Internationale pour les Technologies Objets, and a Professional Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He has served on program and steering committees of major ACM conferences and on the Executive Committee of the ACM Special Interest Group on Programming Languages. He has received awards including ACM Senior Member in 2008, Distinguished Paper at OOPSLA 2016, and Most Influential Paper at OOPSLA 2006. Professor Hosking has extensive experience as a testifying intellectual property expert to US Federal District Courts and the US Patent and Trademark Office.
