Makes learning exciting and meaningful.
Amy Peterson Cyr serves as Lecturer III in the adjunct faculty at the University of Maine at Augusta, contributing to the institution's academic mission within the Communications field. As a 1996 alumna of UMA, she embodies a strong connection to the university, having returned as a nontraditional student alongside her husband David Cyr before pursuing her career in higher education. Her professional tenure includes part-time lecturing roles documented in university service lists as early as 2020, reflecting sustained dedication to teaching and student support. Cyr's involvement extends beyond the classroom, where she actively engages in fostering inclusive campus environments through faculty advising positions.
In this capacity, Amy Peterson Cyr is the faculty advisor for the Seen and Herd club, UMA's newest LGBTQIA+ student organization founded by student Fray Bennett, alumnus John Ellis, and Cyr herself. Established following year-long discussions on the need for dedicated support spaces amid challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals feeling unsafe, the club officially formed after crafting its constitution and bylaws. These documents emphasize equality, understanding, and harmony for all sexual orientations and gender identities, aligning with UMA's values of belonging and access. The club hosts in-person and Zoom meetings to build community, plans educational programs, participates in Pride events in June, and encourages member-driven activities to develop leadership skills among students, including distance learners. Leadership positions such as President, Vice-President, Treasurer, and Secretary are open to promote personal growth. Additionally, Cyr advises the FMI club, further enhancing student life and representation on campus. Her advisory roles underscore her commitment to creating welcoming spaces for diverse student populations, supporting connection, events planning, and mutual aid within the Communications and broader academic community at UMA.
