Armor Gutierrez Rivas is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Architecture, Computing and Engineering at the University of East London, where he is also affiliated with the Sustainability Research Institute. He holds a Master of Architecture qualification. As an architect, researcher and maker, Armor Gutierrez Rivas has professional experience working at distinguished architecture firms including Bjarke Ingels Group in Copenhagen, MVRDV in Rotterdam and KPF in London, where he attained the level of Associate Principal.
Since 2017, Armor Gutierrez Rivas has run Unit 8, a design studio within the Master of Architecture programme at the University of East London. Students in the unit have collaborated with community-led organisations on projects addressing sustainable design solutions, including innovative approaches for floating communities in the Royal Docks and material prototypes using agricultural byproducts. Student work from the unit has received recognition through multiple Royal Institute of British Architects nominations and awards. Armor Gutierrez Rivas contributes to teaching on technical and environmental studies across undergraduate and postgraduate architecture programmes. A 2024 co-authored publication by Armor Gutierrez Rivas examines the mechanical and hygrothermal properties of hemp-silica bio-composites in the journal Construction and Building Materials.
