He leads the Process Science and Technology research group, serves as Deputy Head of School (Academic Quality), and is Vice-Chair of the Steering Committee of the IEEE Task Force on Process Mining. His academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Computer Science from the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (2004), a Master in IT-Software Engineering from Hasso Plattner Institute (2007), a Doctor Rerum Naturalium (PhD) from the University of Potsdam (2012), and a Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice from Queensland University of Technology (2015). Polyvyanyy's professional journey began with student assistantships and internships at institutions in Ukraine, Germany, and the US, followed by research roles at Hasso Plattner Institute and Queensland University of Technology (2012-2018), before joining the University of Melbourne in 2018 as Lecturer, advancing to Senior Lecturer (2022), Associate Professor (2023), and Professor (2026).
Polyvyanyy's research focuses on process mining, process science, computing, distributed systems, artificial intelligence, and algorithms. He has edited key volumes such as Process Querying Methods (Springer, 2022) and proceedings for BPM 2021, CAiSE 2021, and ICPM 2022. Notable publications include Process Query Language: Design, Implementation, and Evaluation (Information Systems, 2024), Adaptive Goal Recognition Using Process Mining Techniques (Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence, 2024), Fast and Accurate Data-Driven Goal Recognition Using Process Mining Techniques (Artificial Intelligence, 2023), and Stochastic-Aware Precision and Recall Measures for Conformance Checking in Process Mining (Information Systems, 2023). His scholarly impact is evidenced by numerous best paper awards, including at CAiSE (2025, 2024, 2021), ER (2021), ICPM (2021 runner-up, 2019), and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2018). As Chief Investigator, he has led ARC-funded projects like Diagnosis and Prediction of Business Process Deviances (2018-2021) and the ARC Research Hub for Digital Bioprocess Development (2021-2026), contributing significantly to advancements in process analytics and business process management.
