About Arthur

Arthur R. Miller, CBE, is University Professor and the Warren E. Burger Professor of Constitutional Law and the Courts at New York University School of Law. He is one of the nation's most distinguished legal scholars, recognized as the leading authority in civil procedure as well as in civil litigation, copyright, unfair competition, and privacy. Miller earned an AB in History with high honors from the University of Rochester in 1955, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and an LLB magna cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1958. He joined NYU School of Law in 2007 after a 35-year tenure at Harvard Law School, serving as the Bruce Bromley Professor of Law from 1987 to 2007 and as Professor of Law from 1972 to 2007.

Miller is renowned for co-authoring the multi-volume treatise Federal Practice and Procedure with the late Charles Alan Wright and subsequent contributors, the most widely cited work on federal courts and procedure, with recent editions including Volume 14B published in 2023 by Thomson Reuters. His other publications include Civil Procedure: Cases and Materials and numerous articles in prestigious law reviews such as the NYU Law Review. He has argued cases in the United States Courts of Appeals for all thirteen circuits and several before the United States Supreme Court. Miller has held influential roles, including Faculty Co-Director of the NYU Law Center on Civil Justice and Chairman of the NYU Sports & Society Program. Among his honors are five honorary doctorates, three lifetime achievement awards from bar associations, two Emmy Awards for promoting public understanding of the law, and appointment as Commander of the Order of the British Empire. He teaches courses in civil procedure and complex litigation, continuing to shape legal education and practice.
