Rate My Professor Arun Kumar Singh

Dr. Arun Kumar Singh serves as Senior Professor of Geography in the MMV Section at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, a position he has held since June 2020, following his promotion to Professor in June 2010 and Associate Professor in June 2007. Currently, he also acts as the Registrar of BHU since 30 March 2022. His academic qualifications include a Ph.D. in Urban Geography from Devi Ahilya University, Indore (2005), an M.Phil. in Geography from Delhi University (1992) with a dissertation on Flood Hazard in North Bihar, an M.A. in Geography from Delhi University (1990) specializing in Urban and Regional Planning and Environment, and a B.A. (Hons) in Geography from Patna University (1987). Earlier in his career, he joined the higher education service of the Government of Madhya Pradesh as Assistant Professor in September 1993 and served as Assistant Professor (HUDCO Chair) at the Academy of Administration and Management, Bhopal, from July 2002 to June 2007. He qualified UGC JRF-NET in Population Studies in 1990.

Professor Singh's research interests encompass Urban Geography, Population Geography, Economic Geography, and Geographical Thought. His scholarly contributions include publications such as "Geography as a discipline in India: A students’ perspective" (2011), "Urban water supply and sanitation: A case of Varanasi and nearby towns" (2012, with Ajeet Kumar Singh), "Urban slums: An enquiry into concept, characteristics and policy interventions" (2014, with Karuna Raj), "Solid waste management in Indian cities" (2015), "Municipal solid waste management in Varanasi: An issue of governance" (2015), "Growth and distribution of population in Basti city" (2015, with Katyayni Mishra), and "Urbanisation in North East Bihar: Pattern and Potential" (2017). He has held several administrative positions at BHU, including Examination Coordinator for MMV (2013-2016), Convener of the Admission Committee (Arts) for MMV (2015-2020), and Member of the Governing Body under the Institution of Eminence scheme since March 2020. Externally, he has been a member of Boards of Studies at institutions like Mizoram Central University, DDU Gorakhpur University, and others. In 2023, he was conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Deccan Geographical Society.
