Arvind Gupta is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Toronto, with a cross-appointment in the Department of Statistical Sciences where he serves as Director of the MScAC program. He joined the University of Toronto as a distinguished visiting professor in 2015 and was appointed full professor in 2018.
Gupta previously served as the 13th President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of British Columbia from 2014 to 2015. Before that, he was Chief Executive Officer and Scientific Director of Mitacs Canada from 2000 to 2014. He earned his PhD from the University of Toronto in 1990 with a thesis titled Constructivity Issues in Tree Minors, supervised by Stephen Cook and Alasdair Urquhart. His academic background also includes a bachelor's degree in mathematics from McMaster University and a master's degree from the University of Toronto. Gupta's research centers on theoretical computer science, mathematical modeling, and algorithms.
