Ashraf A. Kassim is Associate Provost for the Office of Education and Innovation and a Professor with the Information Systems Technology and Design (ISTD) pillar at the Singapore University of Technology and Design. Prior to joining SUTD, he was Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the National University of Singapore, where he held senior administrative positions including Director of Research and Vice-Provost since 2014, as well as Vice-Dean in the Engineering school and Deputy-Head of the ECE Department from 2001. He also served as Assistant Director (Higher Education-Universities) at the Ministry of Education from 1999 to 2000. Before joining NUS, he worked at Texas Instruments on research and development of machine vision algorithms for automation equipment in high-volume IC production plants worldwide.
Professor Kassim holds a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University, an M.Eng. from the National University of Singapore, and a B.Eng. in Electrical Engineering with First Class Honors from the National University of Singapore. His main research interests are in computer vision, medical image analysis, image processing, and machine/deep learning. He has published a book, several book chapters, and over 170 technical journal and conference publications. He has received various teaching awards, including the NUS Annual Teaching Excellence Award, and honors such as the Mendaki Foundation’s Anugerah Cemerlang (Academic Excellence) Award, the Institution of Engineers Singapore award in 2011, the Public Administration Medal (Bronze) in 2012, and the National Day Long Service Award in 2018. He has served on numerous committees and boards, including as a Council Member of the Central Singapore Community Development Council, on advisory committees, and as a board member of several institutions. He has been involved in programme and organising committees of international conferences and serves on the editorial boards of several journals.
