Asim A. Shah, M.D., is Professor and Executive Vice Chair in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He holds the Barbara & Corbin J. Robertson Jr. Endowed Chair in Psychiatry in the same department and serves as Professor in the Department of Community and Family Medicine. Dr. Shah is Chief of Psychiatry at Harris Health System and Ben Taub Hospital, Director of the Mood Disorder Research Program at Harris Health System and Ben Taub Hospital, Director of the Community Behavioral Health Program at Harris Health System, and Executive Director of Psychotherapy Services at Ben Taub Hospital. He also chairs Mental Health America of Greater Houston and serves on the Texana Center Board of Trustees, appointed by the Fort Bend Commissioners Court.
Dr. Shah earned his MBBS from Dow Medical College, University of Karachi, in 1991, and completed residency training at Delaware State Hospital in 1999. He holds certification from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. His research focuses on treatment-resistant depression and ketamine. Key publications include 'Antidepressant Efficacy of Ketamine in Treatment-Resistant Major Depression: A Two-Site Randomized Controlled Trial' (American Journal of Psychiatry, 2013), co-authored with Murrough et al., and 'Ketamine for Treatment-Resistant Unipolar Depression' (CNS Drugs, 2012), co-authored with Mathew et al. Additional contributions cover QTc prolongation with antipsychotics, management of treatment-refractory depression, postpartum psychiatric disorders, and neurocognitive disorders. Among his honors are two Fulbright and Jaworski Awards for Teaching and Evaluation (2012) and Educational Leadership (2014), Baylor's Rising Star Clinician Award (2014), Faculty of the Year Awards from the Psychiatric Residency Program (2013) and Psychology Internship Program (2014), Top Doctors listings by Houstonia magazine (2013, 2014, 2015, 2017), and Castle Connolly Top Doctors (2017).
