Professor Athman Bouguettaya is Professor in the School of Computer Science in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney, serving as Head of School from 2016 to 2020. He received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1992. Previously, he was Professor and Head of the School of Computer Science and Information Technology at RMIT University from 2011 to 2016, Science Leader in Service Computing at CSIRO ICT Centre from 2007 to 2011, and tenured Associate Professor of Computer Science at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University from 1999 to 2007, where he also directed the Computer Science program and the E-Commerce and E-Government Research Lab. Earlier roles include Senior Lecturer and Center Director at Queensland University of Technology. He holds adjunct and visiting professorships at institutions including Bournemouth University, CSIRO, University of New South Wales, Australian National University, University of Queensland, and Macquarie University.
Bouguettaya's research focuses on service computing, web services, cloud computing, databases, and the Internet of Things, pioneering advancements in transforming sensor data into services such as energy-as-a-service. He has authored or edited over 240 books, chapters, and articles in top venues including IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, ACM Transactions on the Web, VLDB Journal, WWW Journal, SIGMOD, ICDE, and EDBT. Key publications include 'Composing Web Services on the Semantic Web' (2003), 'Business-to-Business Interactions: Issues and Enabling Technologies' (2003), 'Deploying and Managing Web Services: Issues, Solutions, and Directions' (2008), 'RateWeb: Reputation Assessment for Trust Establishment Among Web Services' (2009), and 'Efficient Agglomerative Hierarchical Clustering' (2015). He has received competitive grants from ARC, NSF, NIH, EU FP7, and industry partners like HP and Oracle. Awards include IEEE Fellow (2010), ACM Distinguished Scientist (2012), WISE Fellow (2020), and IEEE TCSVC Research Innovation Award (2019). A founding member and past President of the Service Science Society, he is Editor-in-Chief of Springer's Services Science book series and serves on editorial boards of IEEE Transactions on Services Computing and ACM Transactions on Internet Technology. He has chaired conferences such as WISE 2017, ICSOC 2008, and WISE 2012.
