About Attila

Professor Attila Brungs AO serves as Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Sydney, a position he has held since 31 January 2022. A proud UNSW alumnus, he previously led the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) as Vice-Chancellor and President from 2014 to 2021, following roles as Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research at UTS and senior positions at CSIRO and McKinsey & Company.

Professor Brungs holds a Bachelor of Science from UNSW, where he received the University Medal in Industrial Chemistry, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. His research has focused on heterogeneous catalysis. In 2018, he was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Technology and Engineering (FTSE). He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2026 for distinguished service to tertiary education leadership, research and innovation, and social justice and equity. Professor Brungs contributes to national bodies including the Universities Australia Board and the Group of Eight Board, and chairs the Committee for Sydney Research Committee. He is committed to advancing innovative research, transformative education, and societal impact through higher education leadership.
