About Awni

Awni Al-Subu, MD, is an Associate Professor (CHS) in the Division of Critical Care, Department of Pediatrics, at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, specializing in pediatric critical care medicine. He holds the position of PICU medical director and medical director of pediatric respiratory care at American Family Children’s Hospital. His academic training includes an MD from Al-Quds School of Medicine in Abou-Dies, Palestine, a residency in Pediatrics at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, and a fellowship in Pediatric Critical Care at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. Since joining the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2015, Dr. Al-Subu has focused on clinical care, quality improvement, and research in pediatric intensive care. He leads initiatives to standardize evidence-based care for critically ill children, collaborating across critical care, emergency medicine, anesthesiology, and surgery. His clinical interests include acute lung injury, pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome (PARDS), post-cardiac arrest care, and point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS).

Dr. Al-Subu’s research advances real-time, noninvasive monitoring technologies for critically ill neonates and children during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). He developed a novel pediatric swine model for acute lung injury and hypoxic ventricular fibrillatory arrest, demonstrating that volumetric capnography combined with two-site regional oxygen saturation monitoring optimizes CPR quality and detects return of spontaneous circulation. He collaborates with the Pediatric Acute Lung Injury and Sepsis Investigators (PALISI) and the Pediatric REspiratory and VENTilation PALISI SubGroup (PREVENT) on mechanical ventilation, lung-protective strategies, and resuscitation outcomes. His work includes NIH-funded research and multi-institutional quality improvement on airway management and ventilator practices. Key publications include "Good Practice Concepts in Pediatric Critical Care Point-of-Care Ultrasound: A Modified Delphi Consensus Initiative" (2026), "The Association of Teamwork and Adverse Tracheal Intubation–Associated Events (TIAEs) in Advanced Airway Management in the Pediatric ICU" (2026), "Safety of primary nasotracheal intubation in the pediatric intensive care unit" (2024), and "1544: VOLUMETRIC CAPNOGRAPHY MONITORING AND RESUSCITATION OPTIMIZATION DURING PEDIATRIC CPR: AN ANIMAL STUDY" (2020). He was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine (FCCM) in 2025, received the UW Health Clinical Practice Excellence Award in 2024, Safety Leadership Awards, and was elected to the Midwest Society for Pediatric Research Council.
