About Barbara

Dr Barbara Hanna serves as Senior Lecturer and French Major Convenor in the School of Languages and Cultures, Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, at the University of Queensland. She earned a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of Queensland, a Masters (Research) from Université de Franche-Comté, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Queensland. Her research focuses on the self-presentation of non-native speakers across genres, culturally determined practices, cross-cultural comparisons, intercultural behaviour and its conceptualization, the role of online technologies in fostering new intercultural encounters, language learning and technology integration, Study Abroad experiences with emphasis on learner 'selves' in testimonials, learner motivation through imaginary or ideal selves, and employability for language students. Additional interests encompass language learner identity during transitions from school to university and workforce, particularly online and in-country, alongside computer applications for language learning.

In her career at the University of Queensland, Hanna has obtained funding including UQ Teaching Innovation Grants from 2016 to 2018 for 'Revitalizing language assessment: Sustainable change through international benchmarking and knowledge transfer' and the UQ New Staff Research Start-Up Fund from 2009 to 2010 for 'Future perfect: an investigation of aspirational second language performance/identity and students of French in Australian universities'. She has supervised 16 completed PhD and Master's theses between 2007 and 2024 as Principal or Associate Advisor, with ongoing PhD supervisions on topics such as mediated mobile-based dynamic assessment in EFL writing, low retention rates for Queensland students of foreign languages, and fostering intercultural capability in secondary school students. Key publications include the book Learning Language and Culture via Public Internet Discussion Forums (2009, with Juliana de Nooy), Unlocking Australia's Language Potential: Profiles of 9 Key Languages in Australia (Vol. 3: French) (1993, with P. Cryle and A. Freadman), and journal articles such as 'The ethics and epistemology of researching higher degree by research supervision: an encounter with institutional ethics review' (2025, International Journal of Research and Method in Education), 'Impact of an instructional guide and examples on the quality of feedback: insights from a randomised controlled study' (2024, Educational Technology Research & Development), 'Un.siting French Studies' (2023, Australian Journal of French Studies), and 'Supporting peer evaluation of student-generated content: a study of three approaches' (2021, Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education).
