Professor Barry Dumas is a Professor of Computer Information Systems in the Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College, City University of New York, contributing to the Business & Economics faculty through his expertise in information technology and operations research. He holds a PhD in Operations Research from New York University’s Stern School of Business. Prior to his tenure at Baruch College, Dumas served as a project manager for a large telecommunications firm and taught at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. His career bridges industry experience in telecommunications with academic roles focused on computer networks, data communications, and health care administration.
Dumas teaches courses in computer networking, data communications, and health care administration, emphasizing practical applications of simulation, modeling, and networking technologies. His scholarly contributions include key publications such as "Policies for Reducing Blood Wastage in Hospital Blood Banks," published in Management Science in 1977 with Manus Rabinowitz, which proposed operational strategies to minimize waste in hospital blood banks; and "Simulation Modeling for Hospital Bed Planning," appearing in Simulation in 1984, which utilized simulation techniques for optimizing hospital resources. He has authored prominent textbooks, including "Principles of Computer Networks and Communications" in 2009 with Morris Schwartz, tailored for business students, and "Diving into the Bitstream: Information Technology Meets Society in a Digital World" in 2011 by Routledge, exploring the societal dimensions of digital information technology. Additionally, Dumas has organized and coordinated the Baruch Annual Entrepreneurship Competition since its inception in 2000, promoting student innovation in business ventures. His research interests include information systems, computer networks and communications, social impact, and social responsibility, influencing education and practice in business technology.
