Rate My Professor Bashir Al-Hashimi

Sir Bashir M. Al-Hashimi is Vice President (Research & Innovation) and ARM Professor of Computer Engineering in the Engineering faculty at King’s College London. He earned a Doctor of Engineering in Electronics Engineering from the University of York in 1989. Before entering academia, he spent eight years in the electronics design industry. In 1999, he joined the School of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton, where he was awarded a personal chair in 2004. He progressed to Executive Dean of the Faculty of Physical Sciences and Engineering from 2014 to 2018, and then Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences from 2018 to 2020. Upon joining King’s College London in 2020, he served as Executive Dean of the Faculty of Natural & Mathematical Sciences prior to assuming his current vice-presidential role in 2022.

Al-Hashimi is a world-leading expert in energy-efficient computing and systems engineering. His research examines the interaction between hardware and software in energy-constrained computing to enhance energy efficiency and reliability. Key areas include battery-free computing underpinning Internet of Things technologies, low-power test and test-data compression for digital integrated circuits, and energy-harvesting computing. He has supervised 40 PhD students to completion, published 380 peer-reviewed technical papers, and authored or co-authored seven books. Selected publications feature "A Bayesian Framework for Digital Twin-Based Control, Monitoring, and Data Collection in Wireless Systems" (IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, 2023), "Collaborative Adaptation for Energy-Efficient Heterogeneous Mobile SoCs" (IEEE Transactions on Computers, 2020), and the book "System-Level Design Techniques for Energy-Efficient Embedded Systems" (2004). In 2008, he founded the Arm-ECS industry-academia centre of research excellence in energy-efficient computing at Southampton and has led major Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) programmes, including as principal investigator on an exemplar interdisciplinary grant. His contributions align with UN Sustainable Development Goals such as affordable clean energy and industry innovation. Al-Hashimi has garnered prestigious honors, including a knighthood in the 2025 New Year Honours for services to engineering and education, Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2018, IET Faraday Medal in 2020, Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 2023, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng) in 2013, and IEEE Fellow in 2011. He has served on Research Excellence Framework panels for 2014 and 2021.
