About Bastian

Dr. Bastian Thomsen served as Lecturer (Assistant Professor) of Sustainability at the University of Sydney Business School, where he was recognized as an Emerging Scholar Research Fellow for his project on crises in veterinarians' working lives. His academic journey includes a DPhil in Anthropology from the University of Oxford (2022), focusing on nonhuman livelihoods and speciesism in the US, a PhD in Management from Central Queensland University (2018) with emphasis on social innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainability, an MBA in International Business from the University of North Carolina Wilmington, an MSc in International Management from Euromed University, and a BA in Spanish and International Studies from the University of Idaho. Prior appointments include Assistant Professor at Colorado State University (2021-2023), Assistant Professor at Boise State University (2018-2021), and Instructor (tenure-track) at the College of Idaho (2016-2018).

Thomsen's research centers on multispecies relations in the Anthropocene, integrating environmental anthropology, sustainability, rewilding, social entrepreneurship, veterinary anthropology, one welfare, and multispecies justice. His work explores human organization of responses to climate emergencies, biodiversity conservation, and ecosystem governance, with projects in Costa Rica, Italy, the US, UK, and Australia. He is affiliated with the Ethno-ornithology World Atlas Research Group at Oxford and the Sydney Environment Institute. Notable publications include "Reimagining entrepreneurship in the Anthropocene through a multispecies relations approach" (Journal of Business Venturing Insights, 2024), "Embracing “more-than-Western” bird knowledge: A decolonial process to move from discussion to action" (Ornithological Applications, 2024), "Multispecies livelihoods: a posthumanist approach to wildlife ecotourism that promotes animal ethics" (Journal of Sustainable Tourism, 2023), "The promise of posthumanism in wildlife ecotourism: a set of case studies of veterinarians’ role at wildlife rehabilitation centers in Costa Rica" (Journal of Ecotourism, 2023), and "Posthumanist pluralities: Advocating for nonhuman species’ rights, agency, and welfare in ecosystem governance" (Advances in Ecological Research, 2022).
