About Bayu

Professor Bayu Jayawardhana is Professor in Mechatronics and Control of Nonlinear Systems in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Groningen. He holds the position of Scientific Director of the Engineering and Technology Institute Groningen (ENTEG) and the Dutch Institute for Systems and Control (DISC). He previously served as the first programme director of the Master’s programme in Mechanical Engineering and as Director of Engineering in the faculty. Jayawardhana joined the University of Groningen in 2008 following positions at British universities. His academic qualifications include a PhD in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Imperial College London awarded in 2006 for his thesis on the Tracking and Disturbance Rejection Problem for Passive Nonlinear Systems, a Master of Engineering in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Nanyang Technological University in 2003, and a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Institut Teknologi Bandung in 2000.

Jayawardhana's research specializations encompass mechatronics, robotics, systems and control theory, nonlinear control theory, and systems biology, with applications in high-tech systems, medical devices, renewable energy systems, biotechnology, and smart manufacturing. Key projects include the Ocean Grazer for ocean wave energy conversion, optomechatronic deformable mirrors for the Extremely Large Telescope in collaboration with SRON and ASML, and the NWO-funded Digital Twin programme worth four million euros integrating AI and model-based engineering. His influential publications appear in leading journals such as IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control and IEEE Transactions on Robotics, including "Characterizations of global transversal exponential stability" (2020), "On the Characterization of Butterfly and Multiloop Hysteresis Behavior" (2022), "Source Seeking Control of Unicycle Robots with 3-D-Printed Flexible Piezoresistive Sensors" (2022), and "Secure Formation Control via Edge Computing Enabled by Fully Homomorphic Encryption and Mixed Uniform-Logarithmic Quantization" (2023). He has received the Ben Feringa Impact Award (2020), the FSE Faculty Teacher of the Year Award (2017), and was a finalist for the Huibregtsenprijs (2021). Jayawardhana serves on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Robust and Nonlinear Control since 2013, the European Journal of Control since 2014, and IEEE publications since 2012. He is also a member of scientific advisory boards for RUG Ventures, Ocean Grazer B.V., and Sencilia B.V., and leads the TTW Perspectief programme on AI and model-based engineering integration.
