Becki Turpin, PhD, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Nursing at Appalachian State University, where she also serves as Director of Compliance and Student Support. She earned her PhD from East Tennessee State University in 2016, receiving the University’s Doctoral Dissertation of the Year Award for her work titled "Psychometric Testing of the Presence of Nursing Scale: Measurability of Patient Perceptions of Nursing Presence Capability of Nurses in an Academic Medical Center." Her Master of Science in Nursing Administration is from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1995, and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Tennessee Technological University in 1983. Prior to her current role, she was Assistant Professor and Clinical Coordinator for the undergraduate nursing program at Tennessee Tech University, Cookeville, TN. Over her more than 45-year nursing career, Turpin has held leadership positions such as quality management specialist, nursing staff development coordinator, nurse manager, nurse supervisor, service line nursing director, and nurse executive across metropolitan and rural healthcare settings, including acute care, long-term acute care, skilled nursing, operative, and ambulatory services. Her clinical background includes medical/surgical, critical care, pulmonary, and oncology nursing.
Turpin conducts primarily quantitative research focused on nurse interrelation and self-care capability, rural healthcare sustainability concerning the nursing workforce, and enhancing student learning experiences in rural environments to better understand cultural and socioeconomic influences on health and health disparities. Notable publications include "Perinatal Nurses Respond to Shared Decision-Making Education: A Quasi-Experimental Study" (2021), "Peer Training Using Cognitive Rehearsal to Promote a Culture of Safety in Health Care" (2017), and "Mastering the Journey to Continuous Compliance: Process Improvements for Excelling at CCNE Accreditation" (2016). She has presented at regional, national, and international conferences and mentors graduate students on master’s, DNP, and PhD projects. In 2019, she was awarded the Beaver College of Health Sciences Outstanding Teaching Award. Turpin serves as a board member for the Appalachian Regional Tri-State chapter of the Rural Nurse Organization and is a member of the North Carolina Nurses Association.
