Great Professor!
Belinda Swyny serves as a lecturer in Medical Education within the Doctor of Medicine program at The University of Queensland, where she is an experienced medical simulation educator involved in simulation-based learning activities across phases 1 and 2. She holds a Bachelor of Nursing from Griffith University and a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Professional Education from James Cook University. With over ten years of involvement in interprofessional education (IPE) across health disciplines, Swyny emphasizes interprofessional collaboration to improve patient care quality. She is currently engaged in a research project at The University of Queensland, where second-year medical students participate in a half-day Advanced Life Support (ALS) simulation workshop alongside Master of Nursing Studies students to foster IPE between medical and nursing students. Her teaching incorporates art and humanities approaches, building on creative pedagogy for medical training, and utilizes action research for continuous improvement in simulation education services.
Swyny's scholarly contributions include several conference publications and a book chapter. Notable works encompass the 2022 book chapter 'The virtual microscope: tracing knowledge of human microstructure through digital images,' co-authored with R. Claire Aland, Nicole Shepherd, and Mary-Louise Roy Manchadi, published in Making Sense of Medicine: Materiality and the Reproduction of Medical Knowledge by Intellect Books. In 2024, she co-authored '360-degree feedback on the organisational approach to a novel open-plan Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) in a large Australian medical school' presented at the Ottawa Conference in Melbourne. Additional conference outputs include evaluations of team functioning and perceptions of IPE in ALS simulation workshops at the ANZAHPE 2020 and 2019 conferences, as well as 'The Suture Project' and 'Krystal Krash' featured in the Ways of Seeing in Healthcare ANZAHPE Conference proceedings in 2020. Affiliated with the School of Medicine and the Academy for Medical Education, she is available for supervision and actively supports innovative educational practices in medical training.
