Dr Ben French serves as a Lecturer in the Department of Management at Griffith Business School, Griffith University, specialising in Employment Relations. His academic qualifications include a Bachelor of Business (Human Resource Management), Bachelor of Laws with Honours, Master of Laws, and PhD from Griffith University, complemented by a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from Queensland University of Technology. Admitted as a solicitor to the Supreme Court of Queensland, French has focused his career on employment relations and human resources law. He convenes and teaches several key courses, including Regulation of Employment Relationships (7121EHR), Introduction to ER and HR Law (2015EHR), Health and Safety in the Workplace (2006EHR), and others covering employment relations law and workplace health and safety law. His teaching emphasises practical application of legal frameworks in modern workplaces.
French's research specialisations include employment relations law, workplace bullying, disability discrimination enforcement, platform worker classification, and the intersection of work health and safety with anti-discrimination laws. Prominent publications feature 'The classification of platform workers in the Australian context' with John Minas (Journal of Industrial Relations, 2024), 'Workplace Bullying in Australia: The Fair Work Act and its Impact' with Maree Boyle and Olav Muurlink (New Zealand Journal of Human Resources Management, 2014), 'Australia’s Solution to Disability Discrimination Enforcement' (2011), 'Australia’s Fair Work Act and the Transformation of Workplace Disability Discrimination Law' (2012), 'The gap between law and practice when workers are silent witnesses to workplace violence: Evidence from the health sector' (2016), and contributions to 'Regulating Employment Relations, Work and Labour Laws: International comparisons between key countries' (2010).
