Benjamin Lindner serves as Professor for Theoretical Physics at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, with his primary affiliation in the Physics Department and the Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience Berlin. He earned a Diploma in Physics from Humboldt University Berlin in 1996 and completed his PhD at the same institution in 2002 under the supervision of Lutz Schimansky-Geier. Following his doctorate, Lindner conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Ottawa in Canada from 2002 to 2005, working in the groups of Andre Longtin in Physics and John E. Lewis in Biology. He then held positions as a Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow from 2005 to 2007 and as Group Leader from 2007 to 2011 at the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems in Dresden. In May 2011, he was appointed Professor for Theory of Complex Systems and Neurophysics at Humboldt University Berlin.
Lindner’s research centers on the application of methods from nonlinear dynamics, stochastic processes, and information theory to neural systems and complex systems more broadly. His highly cited publications include the 2004 review “Effects of noise in excitable systems” in Physics Reports, the 2012 article “Active Brownian particles: From individual to collective stochastic dynamics” in The European Physical Journal Special Topics, and numerous papers on coherence resonance, stochastic resonance, and neuronal firing statistics published in Physical Review E, Physical Review Letters, and other leading journals between 1999 and the present. He maintains an active research group focused on these topics and contributes to collaborative projects in computational neuroscience.
