About Benjamin

Dr Benjamin Mitchell serves as a Senior Lecturer and Principal Speciality Supervisor (General Practice) in the General Practice Clinical Unit at the University of Queensland Faculty of Medicine. He holds a Bachelor of Science, a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, and a Bachelor of Medical Science from the University of Queensland, and is currently a PhD candidate researching the evidence synthesis supporting general practitioner registrars during consultations in Australia, supervised by Associate Professor Geoff Spurling, Professor Mieke van Driel, and Professor Parker Magin. In parallel with his academic appointments, he works part-time as a General Practitioner at the Banyo Clinic and functions as a medical educator for General Practice Training Queensland. Mitchell is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP).

His academic interests center on evidence-based medicine, point-of-care clinical information resources, antibiotic prescribing behaviors in early-career general practitioners, low-value clinical care, and medical education in primary care. Key publications include "Use of electronic point-of-care resources by early-career general practitioners and associations with their use during consultations: a cross-sectional analysis of consultation data" (BMJ Open, 2025), "Interpractice variability in antibiotic prescribing for acute respiratory tract infections: a cross-sectional study of Australian early-career general practitioners" (BMJ Open, 2025), "Changing the antibiotic prescribing of Australian general practice registrars’ for acute respiratory tract infections: a non-randomized controlled trial" (Family Practice, 2025), "Prediction of general practice licensure/certification examination performance by a measure of 'questionable' activities in clinical practice: a retrospective cohort study" (Postgraduate Medical Journal, 2024), and "‘Low-value’ clinical care in general practice: a cross-sectional analysis of low value care in early-career GPs’ practice" (International Journal for Quality in Health Care, 2023).
