Dr. Bernie Evans is a Lecturer in the Department of English and Foreign Languages at Grambling State University. She teaches composition and world literature classes, contributing to the department's offerings in English literature, linguistics, and composition. Evans holds a B.A. from Mississippi Valley State University, an M.S. from Iowa State University, an M.A.T., and 54 doctoral hours in Educational Leadership from Grambling State University. In 2019, she earned an Executive PhD in Urban Higher Education from Jackson State University. Her dissertation, titled "Factors Influencing the Retention of Students Enrolled in Developmental Courses at Community Colleges," was advised by Dr. Neari F. Warner. Prior to her academic appointments, Evans worked as an experienced journalist and advertising coordinator in the Public Relations department of the Chicago Tribune, bringing practical communication skills to her teaching.
At Grambling State University, Dr. Evans actively participates in faculty governance and departmental activities. She serves as a representative for the English and Foreign Languages department on the Faculty Senate, with her term concluding in 2024, and is a member of the Academic Assessment Committee. Additionally, she coordinates the Book Review Forum alongside Dr. Beatrice McKinney and Mr. Adam Collins, supporting student engagement in literary analysis. In 2014, Evans published a study titled "Garvey and DuBois – A Race to Nowhere: A Feud to Change All Time," which examines the ideological conflict between Marcus Garvey and W.E.B. DuBois and its implications for Black leadership and history. Her scholarship and service reflect a commitment to education, composition pedagogy, and cultural studies within the context of English and foreign languages instruction.
