Dr Biji Kurup is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Engineering and Energy at Murdoch University. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Engineering from Curtin University (2008), a Master of Engineering in Sanitary Engineering from UNESCO-IHE, Delft, The Netherlands (1998), a Master of Philosophy in Futures Studies and Anticipatory Management from the University of Kerala, India (1996), and a Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering from the College of Engineering, University of Kerala, India (1992). Kurup brings over 25 years of extensive professional experience in sustainable engineering and consultancy. Her career includes serving as Director of EN-WIS since November 2020, Process Specialist for the Asian Development Bank from April to September 2019, Senior and Principal Consultant at Environmental Engineers International Pty Ltd during multiple periods from 2001 to 2017, and Senior Design Manager and Senior Planning Engineer at Water Corporation from 2009 to 2018. At Murdoch University, she has advanced from Adjunct Senior Lecturer (November 2019 to November 2022) and Senior Research Officer at the Harry Butler Institute (October 2022 to 2023) to her current full-time Senior Lecturer role since February 2023. In these positions, she coordinates and lectures units such as Industrial Ecology and Symbiosis, Integrated Waste Management and Resource Recovery, Hydrology and Water Cycle Management, and Water Treatment Unit Operations; supervises PhD students; contributes to research grant applications; and co-authors international journal papers.
Kurup's research specializations encompass industrial symbiosis, circular economy, net zero carbon transitions, wastewater and water circular economy, pollution abatement, and sustainability in heavy industrial areas, with a focus on the Kwinana Industrial Area. Notable publications include 'Collective transitioning of a heavy industrial area towards ‘Net Zero Carbon’: the critical role of Governance in delivering Enterprise action' (Renewable Energy and Environmental Sustainability, 2023, co-authored with C. Oughton, M. Anda, G. Ho); 'Industrial Symbiosis - Recommendations on a business framework conducive for successful Industrial Symbiosis at the Kwinana industrial area' (Renewable Energy and Environmental Sustainability, 2023); 'KIC4: A Four-Dimensional Model for Industrial Symbiosis: Validation with Key Stakeholders' (American Journal of Industrial and Business Management, 2023); and 'Water Circular Economy at the Kwinana Industrial Area, Western Australia—the Dimensions and Value of Industrial Symbiosis' (Circular Economy and Sustainability, 2021). She has earned the 2024 Aspire Award from Business Events Perth as a Brightest Minds WA recipient for sustainable impact, Project Robinhood funding in 2019 for community sustainable initiatives, and a 2018 travel scholarship for the International Society for Industrial Ecology conference. A Chartered Professional Engineer in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Kurup is a member of the International Society for Industrial Ecology and actively engages in industry collaborations, workshops, and mentoring in sustainable engineering.
