Professor Bing Ling is the Professor of Chinese Law at the University of Sydney Law School, a position he assumed in September 2012. He obtained his LLB from Peking University in 1989, was admitted to the Bar of the People's Republic of China in 1990, earned an LLM from the University of Michigan in 1992, and completed a Diploma at the Hague Academy of International Law in 1995. Before joining the University of Sydney, Professor Ling served as a professor and founding member of the Faculty of Law at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His teaching career also encompasses roles at Peking University Law School, University of Michigan Law School, and City University of Hong Kong Law School, where he contributed to legal education in Chinese and international law.
Professor Ling's research specializations encompass Chinese civil and commercial law, international law, and public international law (Fields of Research 2020). Key publications include his book Contract Law in China (Sweet & Maxwell Asia, 2002), 'The 'Confused Topic' of Act of State under the Hong Kong Basic Law' (Sydney Law School Research Paper No. 13/06, 2013), 'The Constitutional Impact of the National Security Law Interpretation' (2023), and 'China's Attitude to the International Legal Order in the Xi Era: The Case of South China Sea Arbitration' (2018). He has acted as an expert witness on Chinese law questions in numerous international litigation and arbitration cases, underscoring his practical influence in the field. At the University of Sydney, he is a member of the Centre for Asian and Pacific Law, the Sydney Southeast Asia Centre, and the China Studies Centre, supporting interdisciplinary research on Asia-Pacific legal issues. His scholarship bridges Chinese law with global perspectives, contributing to academic discourse on comparative and international legal frameworks.
