Bo Hong is a Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Tsinghua University and serves as a Principal Investigator at the McGovern Institute for Brain Research and the Tsinghua Laboratory of Brain and Intelligence. He earned his B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Tsinghua University in 1996 and his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the same institution in 2001. His academic career at Tsinghua University includes appointments as Assistant Professor from 2001 to 2005, Associate Professor from 2005 to 2012, and Professor since 2012. He was also a visiting scholar at Johns Hopkins University from 2004 to 2005.
Professor Hong’s research centers on brain-computer interfaces and the neural mechanisms of human speech processing. His team has developed the wireless minimally invasive brain-computer interface system known as NEO, which has advanced to clinical trials for patients with spinal cord injuries. Key contributions include studies on cortical networks for speech tone processing and methods for presurgical functional brain mapping, with findings published in journals such as Nature Neuroscience, PNAS, and NeuroImage. He has received honors including the Beijing Nova of Science and Technology award and recognition as a New Century Excellent Talent by the Ministry of Education of China. His work has influenced neural engineering through advancements in minimally invasive technologies and understanding of brain networks involved in communication.
