Bolaji Samson Aregbeshola, PhD, is a public health researcher and behavioural scientist associated with the University of Newcastle, where he completed his Doctor of Philosophy in Public Health and Behavioural Sciences in 2025. His doctoral thesis, supervised by Associate Professor Flora Tzelepis and Professor Christine Paul, investigated the influence of vocational training and workplace environment on tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and their concurrent use among vocational education students. Prior to his doctoral studies, he obtained a Master of Science in Public Health from the University of Lagos in 2012 and a Bachelor of Science in Biology (Education) from the same university between 2002 and 2008. Aregbeshola was a recipient of the University of Newcastle PhD scholarship and conducted his research within the School of Medicine and Public Health, affiliated with the Hunter Medical Research Institute. Before joining academia in Australia, he worked as an independent public health researcher and as a healthcare representative in the pharmaceutical industry in Nigeria for seven years.
His research interests include health behaviour, tobacco control, alcohol control, chronic disease prevention, infectious disease control and prevention, health policy, health care financing, health insurance, health systems, health economics, health management, access to care, quality of health care, maternal and child health, impact evaluation, program and policy evaluation, economic evaluation, mixed methods, randomised controlled trials, and evidence synthesis, including systematic reviews, scoping reviews, and meta-analyses. Aregbeshola has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, many focusing on health financing, equity, and policy in Nigeria. Key publications include "Determinants of Catastrophic Health Expenditure in Nigeria" (European Journal of Health Economics, 2018); "Out-of-Pocket Payments, Catastrophic Health Expenditure and Poverty Among Households in Nigeria 2010" (International Journal of Health Policy and Management, 2018); "Predictors of Enrolment in the National Health Insurance Scheme Among Women of Reproductive Age in Nigeria" (International Journal of Health Policy and Management, 2018); "Barriers to Enrollment in National Health Insurance Scheme Among Informal Sector Workers in Nigeria" (World Medical and Health Policy, 2023); "Factors Associated with Tobacco Use, Risky Alcohol Consumption, and Concurrent Tobacco and Risky Alcohol Use Among Vocational Education Students" (American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse, 2025); and "Determinants of Out-of-Pocket Health Expenditure Among Older Adults: Evidence From the Nigeria Living Standards Survey 2018–19" (Ageing International, 2024). He serves on the editorial board of World Medical & Health Policy and is affiliated with the Health Econometrics and Data Group at the University of York, United Kingdom.
