Bonnie N. Field is a Professor of Political Science in the Global Studies Department at Bentley University. She holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a B.A. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley. Field's research interests center on political parties and political institutions in transitional and institutionalized democracies in Europe and Latin America. She has a particular interest in contemporary Spanish politics, examining minority governments, multilevel territorial politics, interparty relations in parliament, intraparty processes of candidate selection and political appointments, the behavior of distinct types of political parties, and processes of regime democratization. She is a local affiliate of the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies at Harvard University.
Field authored the monograph Why Minority Governments Work: Multilevel Territorial Politics in Spain and co-edited Minority Governments in Comparative Perspective; Politics and Society in Contemporary Spain (2013); Spain’s “Second Transition”? The Socialist Government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero (2011); and Democracy and Institutional Development: Spain in Comparative Theoretical Perspective (2008). She serves as co-Editor of the journal South European Society and Politics. Field served as Chair of the Global Studies Department at Bentley University from July 1, 2016, to June 30, 2021. Her career includes Visiting Scholar at Harvard University's Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies, visiting researcher at the Universities of Barcelona and Oslo, Postdoctoral Faculty Fellow at the University of California, Irvine's Center for the Study of Democracy, Visiting Fellow at UCI's Center for the Study of Democracy, and Fulbright Senior Researcher in Spain. In 2017, she received Bentley's Scholarly Excellence Award for her book Why Minority Governments Work: Multilevel Territorial Politics in Spain. At Bentley, Field teaches courses on comparative politics, European politics, gender and politics, democracy, democratization, and democratic backsliding.
