About Bradley

Professor Bradley Launikonis is a Professor in the School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Queensland, where he heads the muscle research laboratory. His research centres on excitation-contraction coupling and calcium regulation in skeletal muscle, examining the roles of ion channels, pumps and membrane lipid composition in controlling calcium release during muscle activity and maintaining calcium homeostasis in muscle fibres. The laboratory investigates these mechanisms in healthy muscle as well as in disease states and under stressed conditions, with recent work addressing muscle-based non-shivering thermogenesis, malignant hyperthermia and muscular dystrophies. Professor Launikonis holds a Doctor of Philosophy from La Trobe University and leads projects funded by the Australian Research Council and other organisations. He supervises PhD and MPhil students and has authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and a book chapter, with publications appearing in journals such as Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Nature Communications, Annual Review of Physiology, The Journal of Physiology and Science Advances. His contributions include studies on ryanodine receptor function, store-operated calcium entry and calcium leak pathways in skeletal muscle fibres from human and animal models.
