Dr Brahim Herbane serves as Deputy Head of School and Associate Professor (Research) in Strategic Management and Business Continuity Management within the School of Leadership, Management and Marketing, Faculty of Business and Law, at De Montfort University Leicester. Holding a BA (First Class Honours) and PhD from the University of Leeds, his doctoral research focused on strategic management in the UK automotive components industry. With over 30 years of experience teaching in higher education, prior to joining De Montfort University, he worked at the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (Spanish National Research Council) in Madrid, Bradford and Bingley Society’s Corporate Planning Department, and taught at the Universities of Birmingham and Sheffield.
Herbane's research specializations encompass crisis management, business continuity management, organisational learning from crisis, and strategic management, with a focus on capabilities and responses of organizations to acute disruptions threatening survival. His work traces the evolution of business continuity management practices from process establishment in the late 1990s to sector-specific applications, SME variations post-2010, and broader systems resilience including healthcare. Key publications include the second edition of Business Continuity Management: A Crisis Management Approach (Routledge, New York), “Business Continuity Management: Time for a Strategic Role?” (Long Range Planning, 2004), “Small business research: Time for a crisis-based view” (International Small Business Journal, 2010), “Rethinking organizational resilience and strategic renewal in SMEs” (Entrepreneurship and Regional Development, 2019), and “Exploring Crisis Management in UK Small- and Medium-Sized Enterprises” (Journal of Contingencies and Crisis Management, 2013). He contributes to funded projects such as the National Institute for Health Research initiative “Improving business continuity for health services following extreme weather events” (NIHR204820). Professional designations include Senior Information Risk Manager (SIRM) from the Institute of Risk Management, Associate of the Higher Education Academy (AHEA), and Certified Management and Business Educator (CMBE) from the Chartered Association of Business Schools. Herbane has acted as external examiner for the Universities of Bradford, Liverpool, and Sheffield, and collaborated with British and international organisations on business continuity management, supply chain management, and information technology adoption.
