Professor Brendan Boyle is a Professor in the Newcastle Business School (Management) at the University of Newcastle, Australia, serving as Head of Discipline for Management and International Relations. He holds a PhD from the University of Sydney, a Master of Business Studies (Honours) from the National University of Ireland, and a Bachelor of Business from Dundalk Institute of Technology in Ireland. A graduate member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development in the United Kingdom, Boyle previously lectured at University College Dublin in Ireland, Centro de Estudios Superiores Universitarios de Galicia in Spain, and the University of Sydney. He has held roles including Director of the Health Services Research and Innovation Centre at the University of Newcastle and currently serves on the University Council and as a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Boyle's primary research interests encompass human resource management, international human resource management, knowledge sharing in organizations, team innovation, professional diversity, leadership effectiveness, health services management, and workforce equity and resilience. His active projects span medical technology, health services, mining industries, and community partnerships to improve employment participation for young people with disabilities. Notable publications co-authored primarily with Rebecca Mitchell include 'Managing inclusiveness and diversity in teams: How leader inclusiveness affects performance through status and team identity' (Human Resource Management, 2015), 'Knowledge creation measurement methods' (Journal of Knowledge Management, 2010), 'The divergent effects of transformational leadership on individual and team innovation' (Group & Organization Management, 2016), 'Professional diversity, identity salience and team innovation: The moderating role of openmindedness norms' (Journal of Organizational Behavior, 2015), and 'Too many cooks in the kitchen? The contingent curvilinear effect of shared leadership on multidisciplinary healthcare team innovation' (Human Resource Management Journal, 2021). His research on multidisciplinary healthcare teams has received a Certificate of Impact from Human Resource Management, an A* ABDC-ranked journal. Boyle has earned the 2021 Research Excellence Award for Mid-Career Researcher in the College of Human and Social Futures, Vice-Chancellor's Awards for research excellence and supervision excellence, nine teaching excellence awards including the 2017 Australian Awards for University Teaching Excellence Award, and a national Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning. He serves as a national TEQSA reviewer of programs and student outcomes and as an assessor for Universities Australia excellence awards.
