Great Professor!
Brendon McNiven serves as Enterprise Professor in Architectural Engineering at the Melbourne School of Design, Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning, University of Melbourne. Holding a BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering, he brings more than three decades of experience from a career predominantly at Arup, a global design and engineering firm, where he retired after nearly 30 years of service. At Arup, McNiven held lead roles on landmark projects including the London Eye (Millennium Wheel) in London, Marina Bay Sands and the Singapore Flyer in Singapore, as well as various projects in Melbourne. His areas of specialist expertise include architectural buildings, lightweight structures, specialist and moving structures, tall building design, façades, heritage buildings, buildability, and digital design processes such as BIM.
McNiven joined the University of Melbourne in 2018 and leads the Master of Architectural Engineering course, shaping its curriculum for dual accreditation by the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia and Engineers Australia, allowing graduates to practice as both architects and engineers. His research focuses on architectural engineering, including the differences in cognitive approaches between architects and engineers and their effects on building design. He is part of the core team at The Retrofit Lab, advancing work in urban retrofit, resilience, innovation, and zero-carbon transport facilities. A Fellow of Engineers Australia (FIEAust) and Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng), McNiven has co-authored publications such as "Right on track: The journey towards zero-carbon transport facilities is on course" with Dominik Holzer and Lu Aye, and contributed to articles on sustainable design including in Ecolibrium magazine's "The life aquatic" (2023). His contributions benchmark international architectural engineering education and promote multidisciplinary, sustainability-oriented practices in the built environment.
