Dr. Brett Wilkinson serves as a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science within the College of Science and Engineering at Flinders University. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Augmented Reality from Flinders University, completed between 2004 and 2010, and a Bachelor of Information Technology (Honours). Prior to his academic career, he worked in industry in general IT roles before returning to university in the early 2000s to pursue research. During this time, he developed a web browser for the iPAQ PDA and indirect interaction techniques in optical see-through augmented reality.
Dr. Wilkinson's research focuses on engagement with digital systems, human factors in innovative interaction experiences that integrate technology, psychology, ergonomics, and user experience. His interests include game design, digital narratives, player experience, novel gameplay activities, virtual cooperative gameplay, serious games, game evaluation frameworks, and the development of serious games in health and education. As a principal investigator with the Centre for Knowledge and Interaction Technologies at Flinders University, he investigates interactions with novel technologies such as mobile devices, natural user interfaces, video games, augmented reality, and brain-computer interfaces in entertainment, education, social, and work scenarios. Key publications include "Investigating touch interactions for an augmented world" (2008), "Game on! Accessible gaming for children with disabilities" (2012), "Developing serious games for children with cerebral palsy: Case study and pilot trial" (2012), "Using a trans-disciplinary and trans-institutional team approach and co-design principles to develop an accessible serious gaming system for children with limited hand function" (2015), "Preliminary usability testing of ClaMApp: a classroom management app for tablets" (2016), and "VLASTWA: a vocabulary learning and strategy teaching web-app" (2020). He serves as Course Coordinator for the Bachelor of Information Technology, Bachelor of Information Technology (Business and Information Systems), Bachelor of Information Technology (Game Development), Bachelor of Information Technology (Online), and Master of Information Technology. Dr. Wilkinson coordinates and lectures topics including COMP1103 UX Fundamentals, COMP1701 Games Design, COMP3752 Computer Game Development, COMP3802 Serious Games, COMP2012 Mobile Application Development, and STEM8001 Advanced Professional Skills. He is a member of the Australian Computer Society.
