About Brian

Dr. Brian Alderman serves as Chaplain, Interim Dean of the Peeke School of Christian Mission, and Associate Professor of Bible and Religion at King University in Bristol, Tennessee. He earned his Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible from Emory University, Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary, and Bachelor of Arts from Lee College. Alderman joined King University in the fall of 2014, where his role integrates his passions for pastoral ministry and teaching in biblical studies and religion. Prior to this appointment, he taught as a faculty member at Lee University for six years, pastored the Madisonville Presbyterian Church of the Presbyterian Church (USA) in Madisonville, Tennessee, and served simultaneously as Chaplain and adjunct professor at Hiwassee College in Madisonville, Tennessee. His academic journey began with an initial plan for pastoral ministry, but evolved through a deepening love for biblical studies, dead languages, and scholarship, prompted by influential professors who encouraged him to pursue teaching as a vocation.

Alderman's research and scholarly contributions focus on the Hebrew Bible and related areas. He co-authored "A Note on Peshitta Job 28:23" with Brent A. Strawn, published in the Journal of Biblical Literature 129, no. 3 (2010): 449-456. Additional presentations include "Empowering vs. Enabling: Developing Independent Learners" at the Center for Teaching Excellence, Lee University, on January 21, 2010; an invited panel on "A Review of Chalice Introduction to the Old Testament" at the Southeastern Commission for the Study of Religion in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on March 12, 2005; and "What Job and His Three Friends Could Learn from a Liberal Arts Education (and What We Could Learn from Them): The Liberal Arts as a Model for Exploration and Understanding" at Lee University on September 24, 2004. At King University, Alderman leads chapel services, provides confidential spiritual counsel to students, and participates in the President's Cabinet, fostering the university's mission of faith-integrated education and service.
