Brian Chambers is an Adjunct Research Fellow in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Western Australia. His research specializes in fauna ecology and population ecology, focusing on the impacts of human-induced disturbances such as roads, artificial waterways, and light pollution on native Australian mammals. Chambers has investigated how infrastructure alters movement patterns, home ranges, and survival rates of endangered species, including arboreal marsupials like the western ringtail possum and ground-dwellers such as bandicoots and bobtail lizards. His work emphasizes practical solutions like fauna underpasses to mitigate fragmentation effects in urbanizing landscapes.
Chambers has co-authored several influential publications in leading journals. Key papers include "Artificial light at night desynchronizes strictly seasonal reproduction in a wild mammal" (Robert et al., Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, 2015), "An artificial waterway and road restrict movements and alter home ranges of endangered arboreal marsupial" (Yokochi et al., Journal of Mammalogy, 2015), "Demographic and genetic viability of a medium-sized ground-dwelling mammal in a fire prone, rapidly urbanizing landscape" (Ramalho et al., PLOS ONE, 2018), "Factors affecting the use of fauna underpasses by bandicoots and bobtail lizards" (Chambers and Bencini, Animal Conservation, 2015), "Spatial and dietary requirements of the chuditch (Dasyurus geoffroii) in a semiarid climatic zone" (Rayner et al., Australian Mammalogy, 2012), and "Road mortality reduces survival and population growth rates of tammar wallabies on Garden Island, Western Australia" (Chambers and Bencini, Wildlife Research, 2010). Previously affiliated with UWA's School of Animal Biology, he has supervised PhD theses on species including the Rottnest Island quokka (Phillips, 2016), numbat (Thorn, 2023), pygmy hippopotamus ecology, and predator awareness training for western ringtail possums (Corsetti, 2023). Through collaborations with the Western Australian Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, his research informs threatened species recovery programs and habitat management strategies.
