About Brian

Brian Paltridge is Professor of TESOL in the Sydney School of Education and Social Work at the University of Sydney, part of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. He holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from the University of Waikato, an MA in Applied Linguistics from the University of Sydney, and a Graduate Diploma from the University of Technology Sydney. His career encompasses teaching and research positions at the University of Sydney, where he progressed to professorship, Professor of Applied Linguistics at Auckland University of Technology, and visiting professor at the City University of Hong Kong Department of English. As Director of the TESOL Research Forum at the University of Sydney, he leads initiatives in teaching English to speakers of other languages research.

Professor Paltridge specializes in discourse analysis and academic writing, with extensive work in genre analysis, English for specific purposes, thesis and dissertation writing, and writing for publication. His key publications include the book Discourse Analysis: An Introduction (third edition, Bloomsbury, 2021), The Discourse of Peer Review (Palgrave Macmillan, 2017), Thesis and Dissertation Writing in a Second Language (co-authored with Sue Starfield), Research Methods in Applied Linguistics: A Practical Resource (edited with Aek Phakiti, Bloomsbury, 2015), Ethnographic Perspectives on Academic Writing (co-authored with Sue Starfield, Oxford University Press, 2021), The Handbook of English for Specific Purposes (co-edited with Ken Hyland), and Genre, Frames and Writing in Research Settings (John Benjamins, 1997). He has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals such as Applied Linguistics, English for Specific Purposes, and TESOL Quarterly. With over 15,000 citations on Google Scholar, his scholarship has substantial impact in applied linguistics and TESOL fields. Professionally, he served as editor of TESOL Quarterly from 2014 to 2017 and is editor emeritus of English for Specific Purposes. He teaches courses in TESOL, discourse analysis, academic writing, and research methods, contributing to graduate and postgraduate education.
