Great Professor!
Professor Brian Trudinger serves as Professor Emeritus in the Discipline of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Sydney, within the Westmead Clinical School, Faculty of Medicine and Health. An alumnus of the University, he previously held the positions of Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Professor of Maternal and Fetal Medicine at Westmead Hospital, where he also served as Academic Head of the department. Trudinger is recognized as a pioneer in the application of Doppler ultrasound velocimetry in obstetrics, particularly for evaluating umbilical artery flow velocity waveforms, placental vascular disease, fetal cardiac contractility such as isovolumetric contraction time, and conditions like preeclampsia and intrauterine growth restriction. In collaboration with researchers including Warwick Giles, he contributed significantly to rediscovering the clinical importance of Doppler studies in Australia for fetal monitoring and high-risk pregnancies. Additionally, he established the Westmead Fertility Clinic over 30 years ago, acting as its custodian for 22 years before gifting the facility and $10.4 million to the University of Sydney in 2014. This philanthropic act facilitated the creation and development of the Reproduction and Perinatal Centre, embodying his vision for dedicated research into preconception care, fertility optimization, pregnancy outcomes, and long-term maternal and neonatal health improvement.
Trudinger's extensive research portfolio includes investigations into angiogenic factors, proinflammatory cytokines and endothelial cell activation in placental insufficiency, fetal anemia, tachyarrhythmia, platelet activation, and homocyst(e)ine levels in preeclampsia-associated vascular disease. He has authored or co-authored 171 publications, garnering over 7,700 citations. Key works encompass the ISUOG Practice Guidelines (updated): use of Doppler velocimetry in obstetrics (2021, Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology), the earlier version (2013), contributions to Clinical Obstetrics: The Fetus & Mother, Third Edition (2008), "A proinflammatory cytokine response is present in the fetal placental vasculature in placental insufficiency" (2003, American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology), "Association of Umbilical Placental Vascular Disease With Fetal Growth Restriction" (2002, Journal of Perinatal Education), and "Elevated circulating homocyst(e)ine levels in placental vascular disease and associated pre-eclampsia" (2005, BJOG). His influence is further evidenced by the prestigious Ian Donald Gold Medal awarded in 2007 by the World Congress on Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology for outstanding contributions to the field. Trudinger's advancements have profoundly shaped global standards in maternal-fetal medicine and obstetric ultrasound practices.
