Dr. Bríd Phillips is a Senior Lecturer in Nursing, Course Director, and Deputy Head of Department (Nursing) in the School of Health and Clinical Sciences at the University of Western Australia. She possesses an extensive clinical background as an emergency nurse, which informs her academic and research endeavors. Phillips earned her PhD in English and Cultural Studies from UWA in 2017, MA in Medieval and Early Modern Studies in 2012, and BA in English and Classics in 2010. Her academic journey reflects a strong foundation in humanities, complemented by her professional experience in healthcare.
Phillips' research interests span simulation and interprofessional education, drama and empathy, Shakespearean studies, the history of emotions, health humanities, and medical humanities. She co-founded The Heart of the Matter, a health humanities project. Notable publications include the book Shakespeare and Emotional Expression: Finding Feeling through Colour (Routledge, 2022), which examines affective responses to colour in Shakespeare's drama; Emotions Then: Understanding Emotions in Shakespeare’s Time (2025); The Fallibility of the Female Heart: A Patient's Perspective (2025); ‘Wilt Break My Heart?’ Takotsubo Syndrome and Shakespeare’s Discourse of Heartbreak in Antony and Cleopatra and King Lear (2025); and Redefining the traditional: The purpose and planning behind a four-year nursing course (2025). She has contributed to 32 research outputs across books, chapters, and articles. Among her honors are the ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions PhD Top-up Scholarship (2014), Australian Postgraduate Award and UWA Top-up Award (2013), Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions Postgraduate Travel Grant (2012), John Antonas Memorial Prize (2009), and Rose and Cecil Owen Bequest Prize in Classics and Ancient History (2009). Phillips serves as a reviewer for Medical Humanities journal and has delivered public lectures, including Library Lovers’ Day (2017) and Old Emotions on the New Fortune Stage (2017). Her work supports UN Sustainable Development Goals in good health and well-being, quality education, reduced inequalities, and partnerships. She accepts PhD students.
