Bronwyn Winter is an Emeritus Professor of Transnational Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney. Her career at the university includes roles such as Acting Chair of the Department of European Studies, Chair of the Department of French Studies, and Deputy Director of the European Studies Program. She has taught extensively in European Studies, International and Global Studies, International and Comparative Literary Studies, and French and Francophone Studies within the School of Languages and Cultures. With over thirty years of experience in higher education, Winter is also an affiliated scholar with Sciences Po in France and has held positions as Associate Professor in the Faculty of Arts, Department of French Studies.
Winter obtained her PhD, Licence ès Lettres (LèsL), and Maîtrise ès Lettres (MèsL) from Paris III-Sorbonne Nouvelle, and a RSA Diploma in TEFLA from London. Her research specializations focus on transnational studies, feminist perspectives on security, violence, and same-sex marriage, as well as issues of secularism, Islamism, and women's human rights. Major publications include Hijab and the Republic: Uncovering the French Headscarf Debate (Syracuse University Press, 2008); Women, Insecurity, and Violence in a Post-9/11 World (Syracuse University Press, 2017); and The Political Economy of Same-Sex Marriage: A Feminist Critique (Routledge, 2020). She co-edited September 11, 2001: Feminist Perspectives (Spinifex Press, 2002) and Global Perspectives on Same-Sex Marriage: A Neo-Institutional Approach (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018). Influential articles comprise "Fundamental Misunderstandings: Issues in Feminist Approaches to Islamism" (Journal of Women's History, 2001), "The UN Approach to Harmful Traditional Practices" (International Feminist Journal of Politics, 2002), "Women, the Law, and Cultural Relativism in France: The Case of Excision" (Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society, 1994), and "Religion, Culture and Women's Human Rights: Some General Political and Theoretical Considerations" (Women's Studies International Forum, 2006). Winter has been honored with the Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques by the French government. Her contributions extend to editorial work, including co-editing a special issue of the Australian and New Zealand Journal of European Studies on Reform and Revolution (2017), and participation in public academic events such as the Sydney Ideas series.
