About Bruce

Bruce Lerman, Hilda Altschul Master Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine, Cornell University, has made significant contributions to the field of Medicine through his extensive career in cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology. He earned a B.A. from Clark University in 1972 and an M.D. from the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University Chicago in 1977. Following his internship and residency at Northwestern University, he completed a cardiology fellowship at Johns Hopkins University and specialized training in cardiac electrophysiology at the University of Pennsylvania. Board-certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology, Lerman served as Chief of the Division of Cardiology for 28 years and Director of the Electrophysiology Laboratory at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital until June 2023. He has been a Professor of Medicine since 1999.

Lerman's research interests center on cardiac arrhythmias, elucidating electrophysiologic mechanisms of adenosine, pioneering current-based defibrillation, exploring mechanoelectrical feedback in malignant ventricular arrhythmias, and investigating cellular and molecular mechanisms of ventricular outflow tract tachycardia, including somatic mutations in the cAMP signal transduction cascade. He has authored over 200 original publications, 60 book chapters, and two books. Notable publications include "Transthoracic cardioversion of atrial fibrillation: comparison of rectilinear biphasic versus damped sine wave monophasic shocks" (Circulation, 2000, cited 299 times), "Reversal of cardiomyopathy in patients with repetitive monomorphic ventricular ectopy originating from the right ventricular outflow tract" (Circulation, 2005, cited 295 times), and "Risk of Mortality Following Catheter Ablation of Atrial Fibrillation" (Journal of the American College of Cardiology, 2019). His work has earned the American Heart Association's Established Investigator Award, the American College of Cardiology's Young Investigators Award, and multiple NIH grants. Lerman serves on the editorial boards of Circulation, Heart Rhythm, Journal of Cardiac Electrophysiology, Pacing and Clinical Electrophysiology, and the Journal of Innovations in Cardiac Rhythm Management. He is a member of the American Board of Internal Medicine's exam writing committee for the Cardiac Electrophysiology Board Examination and holds four patents. Clinically, he focuses on catheter ablation for complex arrhythmias and implantable devices for life-threatening conditions. For 15 years, he has been listed among top doctors by New York Magazine, Castle Connolly, U.S. News & World Report, and Super Doctors.
