About Bui Tuong

Bui Tuong Phong was a pioneering computer scientist whose work in Computer Science at the University of Utah profoundly shaped the field of computer graphics. Born in Hanoi, Vietnam, in 1942, he moved to Saigon in 1954 and completed his secondary education at Lycée Jean Jacques Rousseau from 1954 to 1964. Phong pursued higher studies in France, earning several degrees and conducting research at IRIA before immigrating to the United States in 1971. He obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Utah in 1973, with a dissertation titled "Illumination for Computer-Generated Images." During his time at Utah, he invented the Phong reflection model and the Phong shading interpolation method, which model specular reflection to accurately capture highlights on graphical surfaces. These innovations provided the first algorithm for simulating specular phenomena, enabling more realistic rendering of three-dimensional scenes. Phong also collaborated with Robert McDermott, Jim Clark, and Raphael Rom to produce the first computer-generated image that convincingly resembled its physical counterpart: a detailed model of a Volkswagen Beetle.

Phong's research interests centered on illumination techniques for enhancing the realism of computer-generated imagery. His seminal publication, "Illumination for Computer Generated Pictures," appeared in Communications of the ACM in June 1975. That same year, he co-authored "Improved Rendition of Polygonal Models of Curved Surfaces" with Franklin C. Crow. Following completion of his doctorate, Phong accepted a faculty position at Stanford University. His models have endured as foundational elements in computer graphics, remaining among the most widely implemented illumination methods in graphics pipelines such as OpenGL and WebGL. Widely cited with thousands of references, Phong's contributions continue to underpin rendering techniques in animation, gaming, and visualization applications worldwide.
