Caleb James is a Senior Lecturer in Popular Music at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University, based at the South Bank Campus in Brisbane, Queensland. He holds a Masters of Music Research from the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University, where he completed his thesis titled 'Translating Song Writing to a Recorded Work: Comparing Two Modes of Music Production from the Perspective of the Songwriter' in 2016. Additionally, he possesses a Graduate Certificate in University Learning and Teaching from the same institution. As an award-winning music producer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist performer, Caleb James has facilitated hundreds of collaborative projects nationally and internationally, working alongside Grammy-nominated and ARIA award-winning artists. His professional experience extends to music production across various genres, informed by his extensive industry involvement prior to and alongside his academic career.
Caleb James' teaching portfolio includes coordination of the Popular Music songwriting and performance streams at the Queensland Conservatorium. He delivers key courses such as Applied Songwriting (3070QCM) and Foundations of Creative Practice 1 (2335QCM), contributing to the Bachelor of Music (1687) and Diploma of Music (8047) programs. His expertise spans songwriting, performance, creativity, collaboration, communication, project design, and music production. Research interests focus on creativity, collaboration, songwriting, and music production. He has contributed to music journalism with articles in Rolling Stone, Juice, Beat, Time Off, and Rave. Notable contributions include overseeing the production of the Griffith University Class of 2020 graduation song, mentoring students for international showcases, involvement in the Rock School program, and serving as a juror for the 2023 Australian Women in Music Awards. Caleb James maintains public engagement through regular segments on ABC Radio's regional drive program every Thursday afternoon at 3:30 pm.
