Dr. Can Dogan is an Associate Professor of Economics at Radford University in the Davis College of Business and Economics, where he teaches courses such as Principles of Macroeconomics, Principles of Microeconomics, Mathematical Economics, Intermediate Microeconomic Theory, and Business Forecasting. He also holds the position of Special Sworn Status Researcher at the Center for Economic Studies, U.S. Census Bureau. Dogan earned his Ph.D. and M.A. in Economics from the University of Houston, as well as a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Bogazici University in Istanbul. His research specializations encompass Industrial Organization, International Economics, and Business Forecasting, with recent investigations into betrayal aversion in human versus algorithmic advice and the characteristics of AI startups derived from Business Formation Statistics data. Previously, he served as Director of the MBA Program and Graduate Program Director.
Dogan has authored publications in leading journals including Management Science, Journal of Productivity Analysis, Review of International Economics, and International Review of Economics and Finance. Notable works include "Till Tech Do Us Part: Betrayal Aversion and Its Role in Algorithm Use" (Management Science, 2025, co-authored with C. Kormylo, I. Adjerid, and S. Ball); "Short-run effects of hurricanes on the housing markets: evidence from Florida" (International Journal of Housing Markets and Analysis, 2023, with M. Hattapoglu and I. Hoxha); "Real effects of real estate: evidence from unemployment rates" (Studies in Economics and Finance, 2020, with J.C. Topuz); "The role of labor endowments on industry output in the short run: Evidence from US industries" (International Review of Economics & Finance, 2019, with G.H. Akay); and "Starting Up AI" (CES Working Paper, 2024, with E. Dinlersoz and N. Zolas). His scholarship has earned the Davis College 2024–25 Excellence in Teaching Award and a VIVA Course Redesign Grant in 2020 (with E. Tanellari). Dogan engages publicly through guest lectures, such as at the Truist Empowered Entrepreneur Executive Series, panel discussions, media interviews including The New York Times on AI for small businesses (2024), and service on non-profit boards. He is a Senior Fellow of the American Leadership Forum, Houston Chapter.
