Rohlich Regents Professorship in Civil Engineering in the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering within the Cockrell School of Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. He serves as Associate Chair for Academic Affairs and has over 30 years of experience in construction engineering and project management. Caldas earned his B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from Universidade Federal do Ceará in 1988, M.C.E. in Civil Engineering from Universidade Federal Fluminense in 1990, and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2003. His research focuses on construction engineering and project management, including information technologies and sensors, advanced data analysis techniques, project performance assessment, productivity improvement, knowledge management, and infrastructure systems. Additional areas encompass life-cycle information integration, project data analysis, construction knowledge discovery and dissemination, product and process modeling, project control systems, field management technologies, and communication, collaboration, and coordination technologies. He teaches courses on information systems, data mining, project management, engineering economic analysis, and building construction.
Caldas has held prominent leadership roles, including Chair of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Computing Division, Chair of the Construction Industry Institute (CII) Academic Committee, Chair of the ASCE Technical Committee on Database and Information Management, Board Member of the International Association for Automation and Robotics in Construction, and Specialty Editor for the ASCE Journal of Construction Engineering and Management. He is a member of several ASCE committees, including Construction Research Council, Data Sensing and Automation, and Visualization, Simulation, and Information Modeling. His accolades include the 2014 and 2009 CII Researcher of the Year Awards, 2010 CII Outstanding Instructor Award, 2009 CII Distinguished Professor Award, 2008 FIATECH Celebration of Engineering and Technology Innovation Outstanding Early Career Researcher Award, and 2010 Best Paper Award from the ASCE Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering. He was recognized as an ENR Top 25 Newsmaker for leading the CII Construction Productivity Research Program, which produced a handbook serving as a reference for productivity experts, guide for practitioners, and textbook for university programs. Caldas has authored over 130 publications, including refereed journal papers such as Choe et al. (2014) 'Evaluation of Sensing Technology for the Prevention of Back-over Accidents in Construction Work Zones' in ITCon, Liu et al. (2014) 'Validation Methodologies and their Impact in Construction Productivity Research' in ASCE Journal of Construction Engineering and Management, and Zhang et al. (2012) 'Construction Small-Projects Rework Reduction for Capital Facilities' in the same journal. He has edited conference proceedings and contributed numerous CII technical reports.
